Too cluttered visualizations, confusing jargon, scary technology and communicating with the geo-data illiterate.. For many people, GIS technology is hard to understand.
So how do we design and build a map application showing a huge amount of geo-data accompanied by the elaborate functionality to discovered it? Adding more and more buttons, layers, panels, pop-ups, legends, draw tools, scale-bars and GIS terms makes an application confusing, scary and technically hard to understand for the crowd..

Present-day, maps are no longer printed on paper, 2D and flat. Maps are dynamic, interactive and online. We no longer go to maps to find out where we are. Instead, the maps tell us where we are and they form advanced around us on the fly. Web Cartography overlaps the worlds of GIS, Web Technology and Design. A modern cartographer has to be able to find, manipulate and store geo-spatial data, design the functional and cartographic representation of the map and implement this all through code! Vector tiles are a challenge for the creative mind. In this talk we will take you along the path of making artistic styles for your vector tiles like this Crafty map, this 1940 style map and the Paradise in the Polder map. Starting from the importance of having a good and clear tile set to making your own sprites and glyphs with command line tools and software like Inkscape and Gimp. After that we show some trick to add animation with Turf.js and D3.js. Like placing random hot air balloons all over your map! Vector tiles are on the cutting edge of technology and creativity, we combine both to show you the endless possibilities that vector tiles offer!

What is a Web cartographer? And what do you need to know to become one? Explaining trends in the field of Web Cartography. Tegenwoordig is een kaart niet meer een plat, 2d beeld op papier maar vaak dynamisch, interactief en online! De moderne cartograaf moet daarom naast ontwerpen ook kunnen programmeren, data analyseren en bewerken. Web Cartografie zit op het raakvlak van GIS technieken, Big Data, Web technologie en Design. Als huidig geo designer moet je het allemaal in je toolbox hebben zitten! Wat hoort er allemaal thuis in de Web Map Universe? Welke nieuwe ontwikkelingen zijn er?
